(Alliance News) - High-stakes negotiations are underway in Rome as the government prepares for a new round of appointments at state-owned enterprises.
As reported by La Repubblica on Wednesday, the boards of Eni, Enel, Poste Italiane, Leonardo, and Terna are set to expire ahead of the April and May shareholders' meetings.
The first deadline falls tomorrow, the final day to submit the slate for Poste Italiane, which is scheduled to vote on April 27. A summit between Giorgia Meloni, Matteo Salvini, and Antonio Tajani is expected between tonight and tomorrow to confirm Matteo Del Fante as CEO and Silvia Maria Rovere as Chair.
However, a comprehensive agreement covering all entities remains unlikely; the current strategy appears to be a staggered approach to the appointments.
The Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) faces a April 13 deadline for Eni and Leonardo, followed by April 17 for Enel, and a later date for Terna, with shareholders' meetings scheduled for May 12. High-level talks are expected to intensify after Easter. Until recently, the position of Terna CEO Giuseppina Di Foggia appeared the most precarious, though she currently seems to have fended off a challenge from Enav CEO Pasqualino Monti.
The reappointments of Claudio Descalzi at Eni and Flavio Cattaneo at Enel are expected to proceed without major hurdles. Conversely, changes are anticipated at the chairmanship level for Eni and Leonardo: Andrea De Gennaro is the frontrunner for the former, while Elisabetta Belloni is being touted for the latter.
In recent days, debate has also intensified regarding Leonardo CEO Roberto Cingolani. According to government sources, Giovanbattista Fazzolari reportedly met with Alessandro Ercolani (Rheinmetall Italia). Speculation has also surfaced regarding a potential replacement by Pierroberto Folgiero (Fincantieri), though such a move would create a leadership vacuum at Fincantieri itself. Furthermore, Meloni is reportedly unconvinced that a change at the helm of Leonardo is the optimal solution.
