American Airlines has signed a deal to have Google help fund its use of sustainable fuel, allowing the tech company to take credit for the reduced emissions.

The airline said Tuesday that it has agreed to buy and use sustainable fuel, produced from waste feedstocks including used cook oil, on planes flying out of Chicago O'Hare International Airport.

Google has agreed to cover 35 million gallons of the sustainable fuel and will receive the environmental benefits from its usage, allowing it to help offset emissions created by its employees' business travel.

The credit comes in the form of Sustainable Aviation Fuel Certificates, or SAFc. They represent carbon reduction benefits that allow companies to track their emissions reductions without having to physically access the fuel themselves.

American's chief sustainability officer, Jill Blickstein, said the airline is working with companies to grow demand for sustainable fuel and support its market.

The show of support for sustainable fuel comes as airlines and other companies reel from the sting of higher oil prices, driven up by the war in Iran.
